Server Memory Requirements
Knowing how server memory works will help you in diagnosing problems when you encounter them. The process starts even before installation when you choose to buy server memory. The amount of memory you need depends on the total amount of RAM you have in your system. This is because a larger portion of RAM goes to the server memory. Once you know how much you need, next is the installation process. Most systems require a minimum of 512 MB for the installation to succeed. Out of this amount, only about 380 MB will be used.
Newer versions of Windows, XP AND Vista will require a minimum of 512 MB. Unfortunately with these OS’s, you cannot reduce the system’s RAM after installation. So you need to increase either the virtual or physical memory by adding a memory stick. You can then remove the memory stick after installation. The RAM memory will be reduced. For a successful memory upgrade, ensure that there is sufficient amount of RAM in the system. Failure to have this requirement met will result in poor performance of the system. In extreme cases where the memory is at very low levels, Windows may fail to start
